Last Friday, more than 80,000 people demonstrated in Bucharest, accusing the leftwing government of corruption and urging it to resign. Just after demonstrations Romania’s Prime Minister Viorica Dancila has written a letter to the EU describing the protests in Bucharest as an attempt to overthrow the government and defending the Romanian police that used used water cannon, tear gas, pepper spray and batons to disperse the crowd.

Viorica Dancila wrote to consider “these attempts to overthrow a legitimate government” a “violence could represent a dangerous precedent for democratic states”. The letter was written in Romanian and addressed to European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker and to vice-president Frans Timmermans. A respons, is been told, is “in due course”.

According to romanian medias police conduct was widespread criticized in the whole country: around 450 people, 30 police included, were hurt and 30 more arrested, but according to Dancila’s letter the police reaction was “in accordance wih the law”.

After that, Prime Minister accused the centre-right opposition of backing the protests.
