As is now public knowledge, the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska on the crisis in Ukraine lasted around three hours. The meeting was described as “constructive” and “productive” by both presidents, yet no agreement was reached (so, as the saying goes… all talk and no action). Speaking in English, Putin invited Trump to Moscow. On Monday, Zelensky will meet Trump in Washington. The US president had a “lengthy phone call” with Zelensky and EU leaders following the summit. We were able to see and hear commentary on everything: the arrival of the two presidential aircraft, the opening of the plane door, “The Donald” with his trademark red tie and jacket worn open, Putin’s walk, the journalists’ complaints about the spartan accommodation with “camp beds”, and so on.

What no one, inexplicably, has spoken about, however, remains the central point.
In the war between Russia and Ukraine, it is the United States that holds the reins. And no, it is not because Trump aspires to the Nobel Prize for Peace, nor because he is more skilful than others in negotiations. The reason the matter is being managed by the United States is that this war (like almost all major conflicts that have long afflicted the world) has been willed and orchestrated by the United States. In other words, Zelensky does not matter and never has. Yet, until only a few days ago, to say such a thing would have branded one a conspiracy theorist.
But the remarkable thing about what the mainstream media label conspiracy theories is that, once they emerge into the light for what they really are, everything suddenly becomes normalised — and the insults that conspiracy theorists endured up to the very minute before vanish like snow in the sun, without so much as a single apology.
