Independent Ukrainian and Russian media say the Azerbaijan Airlines plane that crashed yesterday in western Kazakhstan with 67 people on board, 38 of whom died, may have been shot down by a Russian surface-to-air missile, although reports from December 26 say it was not a missile, but “missile fragments” possibly of Russian origin.

Euronews cites Azerbaijani government sources and speaks of a drone attack on Chechnya on Christmas morning. Other sources say images of the crashed flight show traces consistent with those of a large missile impact on the tail section of the aircraft, and there are survivors’ testimonies that there was a strong explosion while the plane was in flight. Reuters reports that the plane was shot down by a Russian air defense missile.

The usual statements from the Kremlin: “It would be wrong to speculate on the causes of the plane crash in Kazakhstan until the investigation is concluded. We will not do so and no one else should do so”, is the voice of the usual Dimitri Peskov. The black box has been recovered.
